Gwen has her heart set on learning to play the big harp in her living room in South Wales, Great Britain. When they sail for America in 1903 to meet her dad who has left the year before, she convinces her mother to bring the harp along, but when they arrive in the coal mining area of Eastern Kentucky, she must learn many other things first—like how to deal with a hostile school environment, how to help her mother birth a baby, how to manage a household during her mother’s severe depression, and how to survive a flood. Maybe some young girls would have given up on their dream of playing the harp, but not Gwen Thomas.

The Welsh Harp is a fascinating story of a Welsh family's migration from Wales to Kentucky at the turn of the twentieth century. The coming-of-age story is told through the eyes of a young girl, eleven years old as the story begins, who insists on bringing the family's harp on their voyage to America and who yearns to learn to play it. The story is based loosely on experiences of the author's family. Not only does the book reveal a good bit about the challenges of the young girl's growing up, but it also serves as a reminder of the challenges immigrants have often faced--and still do--and of how far they can move toward success in the course of a generation or two.Product details

The Welsh Harp edition by Merrill J Davies Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Found it a bit bland for my taste. Only bought this because I'm Welsh, wouldn't normally read this kind of book.
Personally, I love all the details and vivid descriptions, and I never rush through a book, as I pause to savor the writing of quality authors. I even found myself placing bookmarks all over the story so that I could go back and revisit a wonderful chapter. Aint s fun? Anyway, this is beautifully written, and a keeper.
Simple writing, but telling the story about a loving determined way for a young girl's desires as she matures in a different country and way of life.
This should be classified for teens and young adults. Very well written and entertaining to the end. Read it in two days.
I chose the 5 star rating as I found the storyline to be easy to follow.
This book contains good descriptions of the times and good character development.
I would recommend it to interested readers of Welsh history and romance.
This is a story based on an actual experience of a young girl who leaves Wales with her family. There is a harp which has been in her family for years which she brings with her from abroad. It is a sweet, sensitive story about Gwen, who has an amazing amount of maturity, and all her trials and tribulations. She over comes many obstacles through determination and goes on to become an accomplished musician. It is very inspiring and uplifting book to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Welsh Harp is a coming of age story of a young girl who moves with her family from Wales to the coal mining towns of Kentucky and Tennessee. It gives
us insight into the struggles of these families, especially the children, in making this transition. The daughter Gwen is heavily burdened with responsibility
at home, but in spite of these distractions, Gwen achieves her ambition of getting an education and becoming an accomplished musician. This is a truly
inspiring story that is appropriate for older children to adults. A very enjoyable read.
